One exposure dramatically increases the risk for 7 out of 10 leading causes of death in the United States. This threat is childhood trauma.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; physical or emotional neglect; parental mental illness, substance dependence, INCARCERATION; parental separation or divorce; or domestic violence.
These early adversities actually affect the developing brains & bodies of children, altering the brain’s physical chemistry, & its impulse control & fear response centers – making individuals more prone to high-risk behaviors.
Understanding this, we must refuse to continue on a path that further punishes youth, victims, & communities by failing to address individual traumas & needs.
