Re:store Justice (RJ), the organization that worked with Senator Nancy Skinner to draft and pass SB 1437, is now partnering with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to conduct trainings inside California prisons about SB 1437. RJ, in conjunction with attorneys across the state, wrote the Guidebook to SB 1437 and prepared a form petition to allow eligible people to petition the court for relief.
Beginning in November 2018, an RJ attorney and staff members will be visiting California prisons to discuss SB 1437. On this tour, RJ staff will be distributing the petition they created along with the Guidebook to SB 1437 and other documents people will need to have in order to submit their petition. RJ staff will also be giving lectures inside and answering questions in order to assist incarcerated people to determine their eligibility for resentencing relief and to provide information about the process of petitioning the court.
SB 1437: FRIENDS AND LOVED ONE'S STATEWIDE CALL RECORDING
This is a recording of Re:store Justice's first "SB 1437 Friends & Loved One's Statewide Call." On this call, Policy Director/Attorney Kate Chatfield and Policy Associate Mariah K. Watson provided an overview of Senate Bill 1437 and next steps.
We answered questions about implementation timelines, petition process, scams and additional information about past and future cases that SB 1437 will impact. As always, participants had an opportunity to ask questions when we conclude with our presentation.
The petition that we created is available on our website at www.restorecal.org/sb1437. We are requiring people to send us their email address when they get the petition for the simple reason that since we first posted it, we've made changes and alterations and we have been able to email people directly with updates. When the instruction book is available, we are able to email people directly.
If you know someone who may qualify for relief under SB 1437, you need to watch this!
