Cares for Youth, Cares Call Tuesday

Ms. Sheppard will join CARES for Youth host, Dennis P. Flynn, on a CARES Call that employs an interview format to learn her perspective on the impact of changes in California law for youth serving extreme sentences. We will cover topics ranging parole hearing preparation and presentation, to actions that must taken following a grant denial from the Board of Parole Hearing. There will be an opportunity for you to ask your own questions of Ms. Sheppard, as always, on the second half of the call. Don’t miss it!
Laura Sheppard has worked with lifers since 2009. Her practice specializes in Post-Conviction Criminal Defense, which means they typically assist clients at the BACK end, after they’re convicted. Her experiene includes appeals, writs, and most of all, parole hearings. She has a passion for helping serious offenders serving long or Life sentences to get a second chance. She advertises prison law as a passion and the California Parole Board as an area of expertise!
Ms. Sheppard’s involvement with lifers began as a child, when her parents mentored a lifer through the Match-2 program. Later, this lifer was to become her first client. With her help, he paroled to her parents’ home in 2013, after 38 years in prison. Since the day he passed away, Laura has considered her work to be a part of his legacy.

Alexandra Mallick is the Executive Director of Re:store Justice. Her work in California includes policy and advocacy to advance criminal justice reform. In addition to working on legislation, she works with incarcerated individuals to help change the narrative and shine a light on the power of rehabilitation.
