“California’s incarcerated person suicide rate is one of the worst among the country’s largest prison systems, and it has risen steadily for the past four years—from 19 suicides per 100,000 people in 2015, to 26 suicides per 100,000 people in 2018, according to an investigation by the San Francisco Chronicle. From 2001 to 2014, the number of suicides in California prisons was double the number in the entire federal system, even though there are more people in the federal system.” Read the story in Mother Jones here.
